Important: All patients under 18 must be accompanied to their consultation appointment by a parent or guardian. A preoperative consultation is mandatory for all patients undergoing I.V. sedation regardless of age
A consultation visit is very important because it allows us to plan for a more predictable future surgical procedure and to tailor the anesthetic to meet each patient's individual needs. We often see patients with complex medical issues that require special surgical and anesthetic care and patients with complicated surgical needs who will want additional time to consider their options. The consultation also allows us to allot an appropriate amount of time for each patient's procedure and anesthetic recovery. We tailor treatment plans to meet each individual patient's unique medical and dental needs, and we know from years of experience that there is no substitute for an in-person, face-to-face consultation.
During your consultation appointment, we will review your medical history, including current medications. We will also review the referral slip and x-rays from your referring dentist, perform an oral examination and explain your diagnosis, and treatment options, including anesthesia and sedation options. If you need additional coordination of care with other specialists and/or your medical doctor, we will address those concerns, too. Dr. Mack and Dr. Thomas use this appointment to get to know you and listen to your concerns and expectations and to explain what you can expect before, during, and after your procedure.
Not all patients referred for evaluation will need surgery. For patients that do need surgery, it is our experience that it is usually not in our patient's best interests to have surgery performed on the same day as the consultation. Patients often need time to consider their treatment options. Some patients want the advice of other specialists, their medical doctor, or they want to discuss their options further with their general dentist before they undergo a surgical procedure.
When patients are certain about same-day surgery, we are happy to provide same-day procedures. Emergency patients sometimes require same-day surgery. We will do our very best to accommodate specific referring dentist and patient requests. We always have your best interests at heart and will give you the same advice that we give our loved ones.
